GOOGLE EARTH KMZ

For our project we wanted to choose commissioned street art from the opposing cities. Erim and I had to do research on public art around San Francisco that we found interesting. Then we sent a .kmz file over to them so they knew which pieces around the city we were interested in. Their job was to go take pictures or any other sort of media in the areas we had decided on. In the mean time, they had also done the same and found public art pieces in Vancouver they wanted us to work with. We then created a simple tour with the areas they had chosen, but added photos to the places to be seen while viewing the tour.

Reading response- Narrative Construction as a Play

Brenda Laurel’s writing Narrative Construction as Play explains the interaction of computer games or other forms of entertainment such as theatre which may be is used as an opportunity to engage females in a more dominant male market. Comic books and early computer games were designed with a male focus. Girls relate to stories, relationships and experiences which is generally closer to the larger experience of life itself that explains character details and colours in the background in the form of narrative construction. Through narrative construction the participant is provided with an opportunity to understand motivation and thought processes. This allows a more comprehensive understanding of the game that males also appreciate. As an aboriginal person, storytelling is a large part of our culture as a tool to teach and engage the children and youth in the communities. Storytelling entertains but is also educational and is relational as it is a means to connect with both genders and provide a more multi-dimensional experience through computer games or online learning.

Ryan Griffis – For an art against the cartography of everyday life

Ryan Griffis discusses Locative Media, specifically global positioning system devices.  The technology is becoming more accessible but also may be oppressive and liberating at the same time.  The technology is used in art to attach stories to a geographic area to attempt to change the way people think about that area or provide a platform for those who have been displaced by profit. Locative media could also provide a means of liberation through the control of history production or self representation, but also has been criticized because of its military connections and use. Ideology has been controlled by those in power through media domination and influence.  Locative media, such as GPS devices bring power and interests further away from the source of power, such as space, creating challenges.  Technology is a means of power over time through control and access.  It can create revolutions as we see the global uprising of the people but still needs to be kept in check for abuse by military or government.

There are pros and cons to technology.  Technology provides us with opportunity and access to knowledge and power. However, like the article says information is becoming farther away from the power such as in space so it makes me think is that good can it be used against us in any way such as terrorism.  so it makes me think to be critical about technology by thinking and becoming aware of all of its uses – good or bad.being aware brings the power back to me.

being cut into vinyl and placed in the desired spot

The vinyl turned out exactly how I wanted. I ran into a few issues, one, was the feet being on the ground, I knew I would have issues with it sticking but it honestly was a lot more difficult to stick onto the ground than I thought. Second issue was my vinyl got stolen within 2 days of being up :(

Urban Intervention- Second Mockup

This is my second concept for my urban intervention project. It’s directed towards the students of Emily Carr, and I suppose some of the teachers as well. My school is known to have a lot of “hipsters,” this idea is made to allow the viewer to self reflect or to be used as pure humor. It depends which end of the joke the person is on. During foundation year, my friend Alex and I always giggled at the idea of hipsters and the fact that some people just try so damn hard, do people in an art school feel the need to fulfill the part of dressing like the cliche, typical art student?

Urban Intervention

Today we were introduced to the art form called Urban Intervention. Many of the examples that were shown in class were not made from vinyl, therefore my concept needs to be somewhat simple. This is one idea I have so far. It’s a vector image I created in Adobe Illustrator of a Seagull pooping. Haha, this idea is more humorous than It is controversial or political. Seagulls are the most annoying creatures ever, however, I only started thinking this when I started going to Emily Carr and being around the market. The Public Market is a family attraction, there are always kids running around with seeds or bread crumbs feeding all the different type of birds around the island. Yes, I realize that the birds being shown in the photo are not seagulls, but pigeons. I think I have this built up anger towards seagulls because they seem more aggressive, they come up right in front of you standing directly ahead, staring at your food. I just don’t appreciate it. Many people I know are always afraid of getting pooped on by them while they’re walking around the water. Anyways, I might try out a few other concepts before settling down…
